Corn Hare: Abnegada

Museseo de Arte, San Jose, Costa Rica
1998

Materials of female metaphor.

In a dusting of loose corn meal intended to be walked upon is the outline of a snared hare that stretches the length the gallery floor, extending from the base of an old sewing machine cabinet. The ‘machine’ on top of the cabinet is itself also made of corn meal and more yellow meal sits in piles around it or as a fine lace. A small clay human hand appears as part of the machinery offering whole corn to the piercing force of the machine.  A long tether runs from the machine upwards and then becomes the hare’s foot-snare.
